What Is a Loudness Meter?

A loudness meter measures how loud audio sounds to the human ear, not just how strong the sound wave is. Loudness is measured in LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale), which is the global standard used for broadcasting and streaming.

LUFS vs Decibels

  • Decibels (dB) measure physical sound intensity
  • LUFS measure perceived loudness
  • LUFS accounts for frequency sensitivity and time
  • Streaming platforms normalize audio using LUFS

Why Loudness Matters

  • Prevents audio from being too quiet or distorted
  • Ensures consistent volume across tracks
  • Avoids platform auto-normalization penalties
  • Required for broadcast compliance

Accuracy Notice

This browser-based loudness meter provides accurate relative LUFS readings. However, it is not a certified ITU-R BS.1770 meter. For legal broadcast compliance, use professional calibrated hardware or software meters.
